I think that Japan is the most trustworthy country in the world and that Tokyo is the most global city in Japan. I also think it is very convenient for major companies all over the world to interact and collaborate in Tokyo. I can't think of any reason why foreign-owned companies would not want to invest in Tokyo.

  • Q4
Can you give us a reason why Tokyo is attractive for your line of business?

Since we are a manufacturing company mainly focusing on cloud servers and broadcast equipment, our equipment is often used by major overseas businesses, in particular at the Olympic Games in London and Brazil. With the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games coming up, we definitely want to take part in the competition for customers.

  • Q5
What potentials are there in the Tokyo of tomorrow?

As a foreign-owned company, I am impressed by the support provided by the Tokyo Metropolitan Government for companies like mine. I feel that Tokyo will become even more open to the world in the future. Although there may be an effect on Japanese companies and citizens, I realize that there should be more publicity on the good points of Japan to share with the rest of the world, with Tokyo as the window to Japan. In this way, I think Tokyo will become the most livable international city in the world.

Mr. Olivier Carnohan

  • Q1
Can you tell us about an activity or a place in Tokyo that inspires you?

Since June 2016, I commute from Singapore to Tokyo each week. I call Shimbashi my second home now. The diversity of restaurants, each with their specialty is exciting. One could eat each night out for months and never taste the same flavours twice in a row.

  • Q2
Can you tell us about your most memorable experience during your stay or life in Tokyo?

Nessa Asia believes that hearing is a right for everyone. We settled in Japan to make hearing aids accessible and affordable for the 85% of Japanese elderlies who have hearing loss, yet do not wear hearing aids. We won't rest until all Japanese elderlies can enjoy conversations with their loved ones, colleagues and friends. We are investing in remote-testing and remote-calibrating technologies so elderlies can enjoy premium home-delivery of hearing aids.

  • Q3
Can you tell us about a social challenge facing Tokyo or Japan that you have interest in or believe to present a business opportunity?

Tokyo is home to a high concentration of elderlies with disposable income. The public transport infrastructure is excellent so our audiologists can visit our customers in the comfort of their home. Retail shops are daring to try innovative activities to attract shoppers, which is excellent news for the elderlies who can benefit from a hearing assessment in 10 minutes in malls and stores without the long wait and stigmas of the traditional avenues.

  • Q4
Can you give us a reason why Tokyo is attractive for your line of business?

Tokyo will be ready for the Olympic games in 2020 ! The Tokyo residents will welcome the visitors with warmth and efficiency. I sincerely hope our gracious hosts will be curious to ask questions of the visitors to learn how we approach solutions overseas. Finally, please remember that for your overseas guests, less information is more relevant. We prefer not to be overwhelmed with details.

Sunba Technology Japan Co., Ltd
CEO
Mr. Haibo Qiu

  • Q1
Can you tell us about an activity or a place in Tokyo that inspires you?

I feel it is difficult to single out one activity or place that gives me the most inspiration. However, I would say Tokyo is a great metropolitan city with many facets. Here modern and most advanced technologies co-exist with old traditions; some century-old shrine and temples are seen next to skyscrapers; you enjoy meticulously presented Japanese cuisine, while having world-class cuisine from other countries. Everything co-exists so naturally, which makes Tokyo a very unique city in the world.

  • Q2
Can you tell us about your most memorable experience during your stay or life in Tokyo?

After I received my MBA degree from International University of Japan, I started my banking career in Tokyo in 2004 and experienced the global financial crisis while working at Merrill Lynch. My banking career in Tokyo has largely shaped my world view and given me an international perspective on things happening around me as I was often surrounded by colleagues of different cultural and ethical background. When I recalled my career in Tokyo, I cherished very much this international banking experience I gained by working and living in Tokyo.

  • Q3
Can you tell us about a social challenge facing Tokyo or Japan that you have interest in or believe to present a business opportunity?

My answer to this question is sort of similar to my answer to one next one. While I think IoT and 2020 Olympics will create an opportunity for our networked PTZ security camera business, I also think aging society presents an issue for us to resolve, i.e. how to take care of elderly people' safety issue while families do not normally live together with them. I think this will be an issue for companies in our industry to tackle in order to develop smarter and more intelligent security devices for aging society.

  • Q4
Can you give us a reason why Tokyo is attractive for your line of business?

My current business is R&D and manufacture of PTZ networked security camera, which is a booming area at IoT age. While Tokyo and Japan as a whole is quite safe place/country for people to live, the upcoming 2020 Tokyo Olympics will greatly increase people's awareness of public and domestic safety. As we have seen how the US market has advanced during the past three years in security camera market. we think the combination of IoT trends and 2020 Tokyo Olympics will make Tokyo/Japan as a whole a great market for us.

  • Q1
Can you tell us about an activity or a place in Tokyo that inspires you?

The chic Japanese garden at New Otani hotel in Akasaka is an overwhelming display of elaborate Japanese tradition and sense of beauty. Careful, detailed, mystique, yet in many ways celebrating the delicate balance between man and surroundings. Coming from an design/architectural background, this is particularly inspiring to me as it represents the humble yet relentless spirit unique to Japanese culture to bring work to the level of magnificence.

  • Q2
Can you tell us about your most memorable experience during your stay or life in Tokyo?

Riding the train systems in Tokyo, especially the Shinkansen to travel to other parts of Japan has been the experience of experiences for me. Trains in Tokyo take vast range of shapes ranging from conventional to monorail to hanging rail, I've even rid a train that has no operator, guess it's computer operated. Way to go!

  • Q3
Can you tell us about a social challenge facing Tokyo or Japan that you have interest in or believe to present a business opportunity?

In Japan in general, virtually no fat people as a social phenomenon is rather encouraging to a medical business in a way that staying healthy is rather done than said, hinting health educated and conscious population.

  • Q4
Can you give us a reason why Tokyo is attractive for your line of business?

Tokyo as the biggest metropolitan area in Japan simply provides the most ample yet easily accessible resources to foreigners. For example, it has the the largest selection of international schools to choose from among Japanese cities. As for the secret, I think that Japan is unique in a way that it has mastered the art of blending tradition and foreign. I say this because I noticed from Japanese TV shows that unlike many western societies that prohibit doctors from accepting 'presents' from patients and sales reps, the Japanese society offers certain flexibility to the fine line between appreciation and bribe. Obviously this is very 'eastern' although Japan adopted the western democratic/law system a long time ago.

ODU Japan K.K.
Representative Director
Mr. Carl Moser

  • Q1
Can you tell us about an activity or a place in Tokyo that inspires you?

I think Tokyo is most impressive during large scale events when a lot of people are gathering outside to celebrate. Be it cherry blossom watching in spring, firework (hanabi) in summer or during Halloween season end of October. The people in Tokyo know how to celebrate and have fun.

  • Q2
Can you tell us about your most memorable experience during your stay or life in Tokyo?

The "aging society" definitely brings several opportunities for our business. ODU Japan K.K. is a manufacturer of high quality connector systems which are frequently used various types of medical devices. The range goes from dental grinders over patient monitoring systems to large MRI scanners. Many of our customers use customized products which are specially designed for their requirements. So we think there will be a big potential for us in the next few years. This makes it absolutely necessary to be present in the Japanese market with an own subsidiary. This shows the customers that we are committed to build up a long term presence on the Japanese market.

  • Q3
Can you tell us about a social challenge facing Tokyo or Japan that you have interest in or believe to present a business opportunity?

The first and foremost reason why we choose Tokyo as place for our Japanese subsidiary office is that most of our customers are in the Kanto area. Our office in Roppongi provides us a very good access to all our customers. Besides having Roppongi as address on the business card gives a good impression to our customers.

  • Q4
Can you give us a reason why Tokyo is attractive for your line of business?

Tokyo definitely has a lot of untapped potential. One can feel that the city is constantly moving towards the future. A lot new buildings are set up, the big train stations are rebuilt making Tokyo a modern metropolis. However one problem which Tokyo is facing is the fact that the time difference to big cities in Europe and North America is quite large so it makes it difficult to efficiently communicate. In the past it was briefly discussed to change the timezone of Tokyo/Japan 2 hours ahead to make it easier to communicate with other large cities in the world. I strongly support that idea. Besides the positive impact on the business another nice side effect would be that in summer it would not get dark so early. So people could enjoy the wonderful Japanese summer nights longer than they can do at the moment.
